On August 15, the Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) cut the ribbon on the Rix-Glankler Early Learning Center, which opened August 17 to serve young learners.

The site offers preschool classes, and centralizes the specialized early learning services and support previously offered through Glankler Early Learning Center at various locations across FUSD.

“I’m very happy to share that with the completion of Rix-Glankler Early Learning Center, we are now able to bring all of our satellite programs onto one campus, with enough room to also house our specialists,” said Principal Angela Morariu during the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The Rix-Glankler site also provides room for expansion of services provided through Glankler, which is located next to Brier Elementary on Sundale Drive. Students enrolled at both Glankler and Rix-Glankler are served under the leadership of Principal Morariu and Assistant Principal Charlene Sim.

“I know how very important these early services are to the students and families who need them, and it is really fantastic to have a facility that is worthy of the students and the staff who will be serving them here,” said FUSD Board President Dianne Jones during the ceremony.

Rix-Glankler’s opening marks the realization of a District goal to bring the staff who can offer these specialized early learning services to a single site prepared for their needs, rather than the specialists spending precious time traveling to serve students spread across multiple sites.

“This was an example of the Board of Trustees, the City and many organizations working together to identify a way that we could better serve our students and better serve our staff,” said FUSD Superintendent CJ Cammack during the ribbon cutting.

Rix-Glankler is located on Isle Royale Street at the previous home of Timothy Rix Elementary School, which FUSD operated from 1980-1989. The property was sold to Kidango for operation as a private preschool, but in 2016, the Board authorized negotiations with Kidango to re-acquire the facilities.

In 2019 the Board voted for the site to be named “Rix-Glankler Early Learning Center.” Donald Glankler was a FUSD Board Trustee, and actively supported the development of the Glankler Early Learning Center, which was dedicated in his honor in 1972. Timothy Rix, the namesake of the previous elementary school at the site, was a landowner and first postmaster in the Irvington area beginning in the 1800s.
